• Thank you to everyone who joined our 2nd Annual NeuroNYC Neurotech Summit, where we unveiled the State of Neurotech in Greater NY (2025–2026) report. The big picture: 2025–2026 marked a translation inflection point, with NY’s academic institutions specializing in specific topics rather than competing. Capital told a barbelled story (a few large rounds atop many sub-$5M deals, with only 13 of 48 regional funders doing dedicated neuro underwriting), and the durable moat is shifting from any single sensor toward “device + data + workflow.“ The ecosystem’s biggest gaps are translational, not scientific, which is why 2027–2030 shapes up as a readout period, where the current pipeline either crosses into repeatable care and scalable businesses, or doesn’t.

• We also stayed busy with our NeuroNYC GP/LP Happy Hour, a curated evening for investors across neurotech, mental health, brain health, and neurodegenerative disease (Emerging Managers included), and partnered on the NYC Neuromodulation Conference(Congratulations to our advisor Dr. Marom Bikson and the City College of New York team on the great success!), where we hosted a student social hour and a Women in Neurotech event. Great to bring both the investor community and the next generation of researchers together.

Neurosoft has shown impressive growth since their founding in 2020, most recently closing a $7.5 million oversubscribed seed round in May. In February, they announced a partnership with implantable BCI firm Science Corp to utilize the Silicon Valley group’s full stack of clinical-grade neural recording tools. Right before closing their seed round, they won a grant from the Swiss AI Initiative to access the globally-ranked, hydro-powered supercomputer Alps, which they’ll use to accelerate the training of their neural decoding models.

This spring, Neurosoft opened a second office in New York. We reached out to their co-founder and CEO, Nicolas Vachicouras, for an interview about the recent move, their headlines from earlier this year, and developments to look forward to from the group. Below is a transcript of our conversation, edited for clarity.

Hey Nicolas, thanks for taking the time to talk.

What prompted Neurosoft’s move to New York? Are there any exciting collaborations you’re planning or resources you hope to tap in New York in the future?

We’re based in Switzerland, and we wanted to have an office and a presence in the US, because it’s our first market in terms of regulatory pathway. From a fundraising perspective, I also feel like there’s more capital and more willingness to invest in this field versus in Europe, which is a bit more risk-averse.

This is the general explanation for having a presence in the US, but we really needed to have a presence in New York for a few other reasons. First of all, convenience in terms of time zones, because we still have a large team in Geneva, Switzerland, and we wanted to make sure the US and Swiss teams could work closely enough, because a 9-hour time difference with California can be harder to manage. And more importantly, I really feel like there is a growing ecosystem here in New York. If we look at implantable BCI companies, there are not that many compared to non-invasive BCI startups, but two of them, Synchron and Precision, are here in New York. So for us, it made a lot of sense. Then if you look at the broader neurotech field, there’s Kampto Neurotech, OpenBCI, and Meta Reality Labs here in New York, and in general, if we look at the broader coast, between here, Connecticut, and Boston, with companies like Axoft or Neurable, it’s overall a good place to be.

There are also good incentives from the state of New York. We are currently talking with them to see how we can leverage that. I feel like there’s a large push to try to attract life science companies beyond neurotech. And by talking to some of our investors, there seems to be more neurotech companies starting here in New York. So I feel like it’s an overall good location.

Finally, we also see a very strong pool of talent, and very good hospitals here with Mount Sinai, Langone, and others. That’s also very important to us.

New York State, and City, have put a lot of effort into growing the life sciences and tech scenes here. I’m reminded of EmpireAI, the state’s AI initiative that operates a supercomputer in Buffalo, because of the supercomputer you’re using through the Swiss AI initiative to train your neural decoding models.

Do you feel Neurosoft is ahead of the curve on neuroAI? Do you imagine being leaders in that field?

I wouldn’t say we’re ahead of the neuroAI curve now, but that’s definitely our objective: to be able to lead this field thanks to our scalable brain interface. There’s a lot of neuroAI happening in the non-invasive space, but there is still a lot to be done on the implantable side. The main bottleneck there is a huge lack of high-quality brain data, which we believe we can solve with our technology. This is actually one of the things we want to develop in New York, as we’re starting to gather more data.

Are you seeking more machine learning engineers and researchers here in New York? And if so, are you finding there to be a good applicant pool here?

We made our first hire recently, Florence Lee, who is a senior embedded systems engineer here. As you might have seen, we are collaborating with Science Corp, based in California, and she is helping with the hardware integration of Science components with our brain interfaces built in Switzerland. And indeed, one of our open positions is on the ML/AI side, and we plan to grow that team even more in the future. We believe there’s an overall strong pool of talent for both hardware and software engineers, in both neurotech (thanks to Precision and Synchron), and more broadly in AI, with strong universities here.

Why did you choose New York over a city like Boston, where the universities, hospitals, and life sciences ecosystem are comparable?

People always ask me: ‘why not Boston?’. They understand why we chose the East Coast, but not why New York versus Boston. I feel like Boston has really been more in biotech and less so in neurotechnology. It’s only recently in the past few years that there have been spinoffs from MIT and Harvard in neurotech. Before then, I feel like the big hubs were really mostly in New York, Texas, and California.

How do you find the East Coast compares culturally with those hubs, and Europe?

When I think of investors, I always talk about this gradient, where you have on one extreme the risk-averse Europeans, then you have the East Coast, and then you have the very ambitious West Coast.

I give this example when people ask me the difference between California and Europe: I was pitching one day to a Swiss-German investor in the morning, and he was asking me what our revenue will be two years from now. That afternoon, I was talking to someone in San Francisco, asking me if in twenty years, they could drive their Tesla with their brain. So that tells you everything you need to know.

I really like Europe. I think there’s a great environment, great innovation, and really, really good talent. But when I think about why there’s still this big difference around risk perception and ambition, I believe it’s a mentality issue more than anything.

Do you think that gradient is the same for the public perception of neurotech — do you find people themselves are less receptive of neurotech in Europe?

For sure. My co-founder was in California a few months ago and told me, “I was stopped at a red light, and every car waiting there had no driver.” You won’t see that in Switzerland yet. In general, Europeans tend to view advanced technologies through the lens of risk: focusing more on the negatives than the positives, when there are always both. In the US, the emphasis falls on the positives. There are exceptions, of course: I’ve met great people who embrace risk in Europe and Switzerland. Our lead investor is a great example: they are European, even though their founder grew his company in the US before coming back, so he’s heavily US-minded. But yes, I see this gradient across regulation, public perception, and funding alike.

Speaking of the West Coast, are you excited to be working with Science Corp, a group in the heart of things in Silicon Valley?

Yes, for sure. I have known Max Hodak for many years now and have followed his work at Science Corp, and it’s one of these companies where I really believe in the technologies they’re building. There are different approaches and technologies to building BCIs, and in particular the backend electronics required for a fully implantable system, and Science Corp are working on the right technology stack and form factors that I would have explored if I had the same amount of money as they have.

And then their team is really excellent. We are really happy with the people we’re working with there. So yes, definitely exciting. And, finally, Max helped me a lot to understand the difference between the US investor mindset, versus European ones. For me, it was a big clash. When I started pitching to California investors, I thought we were speaking a different language. So it was helpful.

I noticed the parallels between Neurosoft’s approach and Science Corp’s — it seems, just in watching interviews of Max, that he cares deeply about creative and feasible solutions to bio-integration, for example. Are you actively working with Science day-to-day?

Yes, our R&D team has regular meetings with them and daily email exchanges. We are really working hand-in-hand together to combine technologies.

On the note of Silicon Valley, some frontier AI labs recently opened up here in New York City. Do you see any future neuroAI collaborations happening here?

Yes. We recently announced our VP of Neuro AI hire, who is putting in place our AI strategy, and part of it is to set up collaborations with either researchers or companies who are actively in the neuroAI field, if we think that there are synergies. I cannot tell you any names for now, but we are definitely interested in collaboration in that area.

NeuroAI is something that NeuroNYC is very interested in covering and being an active part of. I think I had seen you say in a past interview that BCI and AI are becoming one and the same, that to be ahead in one is to be ahead in the other.

I know there’s a big hype around AI in general, but historically AI has always played a very important role for BCIs, in helping decode brain activity. And there is also a lot of interest in both directions: not only how AI can improve neurotech, but also the opposite: how what we learn from the brain can help improve AI. This loop is super interesting from a broader perspective, and I am also personally interested in how these tools can help us better understand biological intelligence and cognition.

Across the five boroughs, Long Island, the Hudson Valley, northern New Jersey, and western Connecticut, the metro region is home to more than 5,000 life sciences businesses, the most of any U.S. metro region, leading the Boston region by 30%. Key players include universities like NYU, Columbia, Rockefeller University, Rutgers, Princeton, Yale, and the CUNYs, hospitals like NYU Langone, New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell, Mt. Sinai, Montefiore Einstein, and Northwell Health, and institutions like the New York Genome Center, the New York State Psychiatric Institute, and the Nathan Kline Institute. Together, these groups received $3.3 billion in NIH funding in 2024, the most federal funding given to life sciences groups in any U.S. metro region. The region is also home to major life sciences companies like Pfizer, Regeneron, Johnson & Johnson, Roivant, Axsome Therapeutics, and Bristol-Myers Squibb.

Despite a density of talent in the region, New York City’s life sciences startup ecosystem is just starting up. Back in 2014, New York City life sciences startups raised only $50 million in venture capital (VC) funding. Two years later, recognizing economic potential, the city announced LifeSci NYC, a $1 billion commitment to life sciences in the five boroughs. The initiative has focused on increasing square footage of lab space for startups and providing resources to accelerate growth. In 2018, Johnson & Johnson opened JLABS @ NYC in SoHo, a life sciences startup incubator, with help from the city; in 2022, the city cut the ribbon on the Taystee Building in West Harlem, providing lab space for life sciences research groups like Harlem Biospace and a CCNY startup incubator; in 2023, the city committed to build SPARC Kips Bay, a development five times the square footage of the Taystee Building, which will provide more parceled lab space, along with space for New York state and city schools. Besides infrastructure, the city has promoted innovation with credit and resources: in 2018, LifeSci NYC introduced an expansion fund to provide loans and guidance to Seed and Series A life sciences startups; in 2022, the city introduced a yearly Founder Fellowship; in 2023, then-Mayor Eric Adams passed a biotech tax credit designed to benefit early-stage biotech startups.

The city’s life sciences startups responded, and VCs got the memo. A decade later, New York City life sciences startups raised $1.8 billion — 25 times their 2014 total, adjusted for inflation. $2 billion was raised by life sciences startups across the greater metro region that year, the fourth-most among U.S. metro regions. To the city, its investments have been a success, seeing the metro region’s life sciences economic output compound 8% annually from 2014 to 2024, leading the city’s total rate of 2% over that time. The life sciences sector saw a 70.9% GDP growth from 2019 to 2024, doubling that of Finance & Insurance.

The strength of the local life sciences industry and the growth of its startup ecosystem are good proxies for expected growth of many of the most valuable neurotech firms to come: those developing clinical and implanted neurotech, who will draw on much of the same research talent pool as pharma and biotech firms, and whose products will require the same investor resilience to FDA hurdles and extended timelines to revenue. As expected, such neurotech firms have participated in the growth: Synchron, which places a stent electrode in an artery of the brain for computer interfacing, was incorporated in 2016 in Brooklyn and recently reached a $1 billion valuation with a Series D fundraiser of $345 million; Precision Neuroscience, which places electrodes under the scalp for computer interfacing, was founded in Manhattan in 2021 and has raised $155 million in four rounds of funding since.

But for neurotech companies that are not implanting devices or promising medical benefits — imagine Õura using neural data to generate health suggestions, or a company building software and hardware for other neurotech groups — the health of the local tech sector is another good proxy for estimated growth. And, like the life sciences, the local tech startup ecosystem has come into form relatively recently. Recognizing a lag behind other cities’ tech economies in the early 2010s, the city led initiatives to bolster local tech: in 2008, the city started NYC Seed, a VC firm which invested in seed-stage tech startups until 2015, and in 2010 the city gave $100 million to Cornell University to help build Cornell Tech, a graduate tech campus and startup incubator, on Roosevelt Island, which spurred NYU and Columbia to found data science graduate programs soon after. In 2010 Google moved into Chelsea, and in 2012 Facebook opened its first engineering operation beyond the West Coast in Midtown.

These developments brought New York tech up to speed, and by the 2020s it was ready for the A.I. boom, as the percentage of the city’s total VC investments going to local tech startups from 2019 to 2024 grew from 37.6% to 52.4% while the sector saw 54.2% GDP growth, and 35 A.I.-related local startups have reached $1 billion valuations. Those non-implanted, non-clinical neurotech startups saw growth in the same years: CTRL Labs, which uses wrist-based motor signal electrodes for device control, was founded in Midtown in 2015 and then acquired by Meta in 2019 for up to $1 billion (Meta subsequently opened their first New York-based Reality Labs office in its place); Synaptrix Labs, which uses wearable electrodes for computer interfacing, was founded in Manhattan in 2023 and secured up to $10 million in seed funding from Mark Cuban Companies just one year later.

In an environment where world-class scientists and engineers are trained around every corner, startup infrastructure and acceleration have become a public priority, and VCs continue to invest more heavily into life sciences and tech, the New York metro region is well positioned to lead neurotech innovation in coming years.

As a global leader in research, medicine, tech, finance, and policy, the New York metro region is well-positioned to lead neurotech. 5,000+ life science businesses across the five boroughs, Long Island, the Hudson Valley, northern New Jersey, and western Connecticut raised $2 billion in venture capital and received $3.3 billion in NIH funding in 2024 — that’s the most life sciences businesses with the fourth-most VC funding and the most federal funding for the sector across U.S. metro regions. New York City’s startup ecosystem is recognized as #2 globally with a collective valuation of $621 billion, driven by a rising tech sector. Upstate, Albany is at the forefront of the tech policy conversation with its 2025 RAISE Act.

Recognizing the region’s potential, NeuroNYC was founded in 2022 by a group of researchers, engineers, and founders from Sharper Sense, OpenBCI, Synchron, NYU, Columbia University, Cornell Tech, Meta, and Apple on three goals: Community Orchestration, to bridge gaps between hubs of the local neurotech industry; Regional Advocacy, to amplify awareness for neurotech in the New York region; and Ethical Stewardship, to increase transparency of the local ecosystem to ethically guide progress.

Towards these goals, we organize events bringing together key hubs. We began in 2023 with a handful of happy hours at leading local neurotech developers like Synchron and OpenBCI, a tradition that has been ongoing quarterly since. Between these, we held a symposium at Brown Rudnick LLP, where panelists from Columbia, NYU, IBM, and Brainify.AI joined Bay Area counterparts from Stanford, UCSF, and Meta to discuss progress towards neural foundation models for AI; we hosted NeuroBall, a black-tie gala joining industry, law, policy, and VC, sponsored by OpenBCI, Synchron, and Cooley LLP; and we held a Summer Summit with Solomon Partners and Boston Consulting Group, where panelists from Neuvotion, Northwell Health, and Jumpspace VC discussed the state of commercialization of neurotech. Digitally, we streamline resources to help navigate the ecosystem: we’ve created an ecosystem tracker that lists and visualizes companies, labs, clinics, and funders in the metro region; we broadcast trials, products, and papers coming from these groups; our job page centralizes their career openings; and our NeuroNYC Wire collects relevant headlines across local media.

Now, we’re excited to continue promoting the local neurotech ecosystem here, with our Substack. We’ll use our proximity to New York neurotech R&D, policymaking, and markets to bring developing stories to light, engaging with discourse and key figures in the neurotech world. • April was a great month for the NeuroNYC community. We joined the NY Tech Alliance event, where attendees explored cutting-edge neurotech demos including a showcase from our own Charlie Rodenkirch, CEO of Sharper Sense. • On March 26th, we convened in Times Square Tower for an evening at the frontier of neuroscience and AI, focused on Brain Foundation Models; large-scale systems trained on diverse neural data to capture and generalize brain function. Bringing together leading researchers and builders across academia and industry, the symposium sparked sharp discussions on scaling, generalization, and real-world deployment, from clinical diagnostics to BCIs. Credit to Margot Hanley and Peter Zhegin for creating one of the most intellectually vibrant rooms in NYC. This event is the launch of the Neuro AI initiative.
